A statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Badr Abdelatty held a phone call with Steve Witkoff on July 18 amid military escalation in the Middle East. The two officials exchanged views on the latest developments as part of ongoing consultation and coordination between Egypt and the United States. Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for resolving the current crisis through dialogue and diplomatic means. He welcomed advancements in the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of adhering to the MoU provisions during the conversation with the US special envoy. Abdelatty described the agreement as a constructive step toward reducing tensions and enhancing security and stability in the region. The ministry’s account noted that the discussion reflected Cairo’s consistent emphasis on peaceful resolutions to multiple regional challenges.

A CNN report from June detailed the 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding that the United States and Iran reached to halt hostilities. The document includes provisions for easing sanctions on Iranian oil exports, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and setting a 60-day window for further nuclear negotiations. According to the Gulf International Forum, the MoU addresses key differences over Tehran’s nuclear program while aiming to secure Gulf stability and energy markets.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted several similar calls with US and other regional counterparts in recent months to address ongoing crises. Previous discussions focused on de-escalation following the agreement that ended active fighting earlier this summer. Egypt has maintained an active diplomatic role in efforts involving various Middle East flashpoints.

In a separate phone conversation on the same day, Abdelatty spoke with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi about rapidly escalating regional tensions. The two ministers reviewed the serious risks to peace and stability along with diplomatic initiatives to return to negotiations. They agreed on the necessity of containing the situation to avoid a broader conflict and committed to continued coordination in the period ahead.
