The Amiri Diwan said in a statement that Sheikh Hamad died on Sunday morning, prompting national mourning for the ruler who had reshaped Qatar over nearly two decades in power. “With hearts steadfast in faith in God’s decree and destiny, the Amiri Diwan mourns the great loss to the nation of the late – may God have mercy on him – His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away this morning,” the statement read. Reuters reported that the announcement did not specify a cause of death. The development marks the end of an era for the energy-rich state, where Sheikh Hamad’s policies continue to define its international standing.
Sheikh Hamad seized power from his father in a bloodless 1995 palace coup and ruled until handing over to his son Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in 2013, a rare voluntary abdication in the region that broke with tradition. A profile by Anadolu Agency noted that during his reign Qatar’s GDP grew more than 24-fold while the value added by its hydrocarbon sector expanded dramatically. According to the same assessment, GDP per capita increased nearly sixfold as the country leveraged its vast natural gas reserves.
The former emir drove development of the North Field, the largest single gas field in the world, which turned Qatar into the top exporter of liquefied natural gas. Reuters reported that by 2006 production capacity had reached 77 million tonnes per annum, laying the foundation for the state’s immense wealth. A separate assessment found that average annual income per person rose to $86,440, making Qatar the richest country per capita at the time.
Sheikh Hamad established the Al Jazeera media network in 1996, which according to Reuters gave the small Gulf nation an outsized voice in Arab and international affairs. He also oversaw Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a project that accelerated infrastructure investment and remade much of the capital Doha. The late ruler additionally created the Qatar Investment Authority in 2005, a sovereign wealth fund that had deployed more than $100 billion in global assets by the end of his reign, including stakes in Barclays, Harrods and Paris Saint-Germain.
Throughout his time in power Sheikh Hamad balanced relations with Iran and the United States, hosting two American military bases while maintaining ties with Tehran. He played a mediating role in several regional disputes, including facilitating talks involving the Taliban and various Palestinian factions, historical records show. Municipal elections that allowed women to vote and run for office were introduced under his leadership, along with the country’s first permanent constitution in 2004.
The Amiri Diwan has not yet detailed funeral arrangements, though national observances are expected in the coming days. Sheikh Hamad’s successor, Sheikh Tamim, has guided Qatar through subsequent diplomatic crises and the 2022 World Cup, building on the foundations established during his father’s rule. Qatar’s liquefied natural gas expansion remains central to its economy, with the North Field continuing to underpin its global influence.
