At a joint press conference in El Alamein on August 13, 2026, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Türkiye-Egypt relations are at an excellent level under the leadership of the two countries’ presidents. Fidan added that Ankara and Cairo share the same position on Libya’s unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty and indivisibility. The ministers also agreed on the need to take more serious measures on Gaza, according to coverage by Anadolu Agency. Abdelatty stated that Türkiye-Egypt relations are indeed built on strong foundations. The two top diplomats signed several bilateral agreements covering political, economic and security cooperation during the visit.

The discussions addressed a range of regional issues including the situations in Syria, Sudan, Libya and Black Sea shipping, in addition to the occupied Palestinian territories. The ministers condemned violations by Israel against the Palestinian people in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and in the Gaza Strip. They affirmed their complete rejection of any infringement on Palestinian rights, according to statements from the joint press conference. The meeting took place as Fidan visited Egypt for high-level talks that also included a session with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi.

Bilateral trade between Türkiye and Egypt reached approximately $8 billion in 2025 with both sides targeting $15 billion annually, according to figures cited in Turkish Foreign Ministry announcements. Turkish investments in Egypt exceed $4 billion and provide employment for around 100,000 Egyptians, data from the same ministry show. The latest talks build on momentum from previous visits including Abdelatty’s trip to Türkiye in November 2025 and Fidan’s earlier journey to Cairo in June 2026.

The two countries established a High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council and a Joint Planning Group in recent years as part of their rapprochement that began with exploratory discussions in 2021, a review by the Arab Center Washington DC noted. Officials have since signed multiple memoranda of understanding focused on trade, defense industry collaboration and regional coordination. Fidan is expected to host the council’s next meeting in Türkiye in 2028 following the second Joint Planning Group session co-chaired during this visit.

Regional coordination has intensified around conflicts in Gaza, where the ministers called for an end to attacks, implementation of a cease-fire, increased humanitarian assistance and progress on a second phase of a peace plan. They also addressed Israeli actions involving Lebanon and Syria along with efforts to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity. On Sudan the diplomats expressed support for sovereignty, unity and dialogue while reiterating backing for Libya’s political unity and stability, according to the joint statements.

The visit coincides with Egypt reviewing possible membership in the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, as indicated in remarks attributed to Abdelatty during related discussions. Both sides emphasized addressing regional disputes through dialogue and diplomacy including via the R4 initiative that brings together Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Additional talks covered potential cooperation in energy, transportation connectivity and military ties to support broader economic goals.
