The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen announced that its air defense forces intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by the Houthi militia early on October 7, 2026, toward the area north of Riyadh. Major General Turki Al-Malki, the coalition’s official spokesman, said the successful interception prevented the projectile from reaching its intended target in the Saudi capital region. Al-Malki added that the coalition had located the missile’s launch platform over Sanaa through its intelligence systems and would proceed to destroy it.

Al-Malki had stated the previous evening that the Yemeni governorates of Sanaa, Saada and Amran served as the primary origins for Houthi missile attacks against the kingdom. The coalition would sustain operations aimed at neutralizing ballistic and surface-to-surface missile threats while eliminating their launch sites, according to the spokesman. Such actions form part of the coalition’s established response to repeated cross-border attacks.

The coalition, which Saudi Arabia leads in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government, has faced persistent Houthi attempts to strike Saudi territory with missiles and drones since its intervention began in 2015. Al Arabiya English reported that a similar ballistic missile launched toward Khamis Mushait was also intercepted and destroyed in a related operation. These events underscore the coalition’s ongoing vigilance against threats emanating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.

A separate statement from the coalition earlier in 2026 described the Houthi militia’s targeting of civilian areas, including attempts on cities such as Taif, Baish, Farasan and Yanbu, as reflecting systematic hostility. Asharq Al-Awsat noted that Saudi air defenses had thwarted those attempts as well. The coalition maintains the right to take proportionate measures under international humanitarian law to deter further attacks, Al-Malki has repeatedly affirmed.

Qatar News Agency, which distributed the coalition’s latest statement from Riyadh, highlighted the spokesman’s commitment to tracking and eliminating launch capabilities in Sanaa. The Saudi Press Agency has documented comparable interceptions throughout the conflict, demonstrating consistent performance by the kingdom’s air defense systems. These defenses have protected major population centers and infrastructure from the majority of incoming threats.

The broader Yemen conflict, which began with the Houthi takeover of Sanaa in 2014, has drawn in regional actors and complicated United Nations-led peace initiatives over more than a decade. Al-Malki has described the militia’s actions as intransigent and aimed at civilians, a characterization echoed in multiple coalition statements since the war’s outset. The latest interception adds to a pattern of successful defenses that have limited damage within Saudi borders amid continued regional tensions.
