GCC Chief Strongly Denounces Iranian Drone Strikes Targeting Bahrain

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi condemned in the strongest terms Iranian drone attacks against Bahrain on June 27, 2026, describing the strikes on civilian facilities and critical infrastructure as treacherous acts that undermine ongoing international and regional peace initiatives. The GCC leader pointed out that such targeting amid efforts to consolidate security and resolve crises highlights Iran’s intent to obstruct stability across the region. Albudaiwi reaffirmed the council’s complete backing for all steps Bahrain takes to bolster its security, safeguard sovereignty and defend its territorial integrity.

The statement distributed by Qatar News Agency from Riyadh detailed how Iran’s repeated actions run counter to broader attempts at fostering understanding and dialogue among regional states. According to the GCC Secretariat’s prior records, similar condemnations followed a wave of attacks in February 2026 that struck multiple member states and Jordan, prompting an emergency Ministerial Council session in Manama. That March 1 meeting produced a formal rejection of the strikes as violations of sovereignty, international law and the UN Charter, the GCC website reported.

A UN Security Council resolution adopted on March 11, 2026, and co-sponsored by 136 nations including all GCC states, condemned Tehran’s actions as a breach of international law and a threat to global peace, according to Security Council Report documentation. Resolution 2817 demanded an immediate halt to the attacks and underscored the need to protect civilians and infrastructure. The GCC Secretary General’s latest remarks build on that framework by addressing renewed drone operations specifically against Bahraini targets.

Albudaiwi’s declaration aligns with a series of official GCC positions issued throughout 2026 that consistently frame Iranian strikes as destabilising and contrary to principles of good neighbourliness. The February assaults damaged civilian sites, service facilities and residential zones across the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, the GCC Ministerial Council statement from March 1 said. Those incidents spread fear among populations and caused material losses while threatening lives, according to the same council assessment.

Public statements from the GCC Secretariat have repeatedly stressed that the security of any member state forms an indivisible part of the collective security of all six nations. In the current case, the focus remains on Bahrain’s right to take defensive measures without external interference. Earlier condemnations also extended to attacks on Kuwait and Jordan, demonstrating a pattern that the council has described as persistent hostile policies, SPA reports from previous briefings indicated.

The latest Iranian actions come despite diplomatic overtures aimed at de-escalation, a point underscored across multiple GCC communications this year. Albudaiwi’s statement on Saturday reiterated that such behaviour distances peoples, sows discord and closes avenues for dialogue that GCC states have long promoted. The council continues to monitor developments while maintaining its unified stance on protecting member states’ sovereignty.
