Heavy rain triggered flooding and transport disruptions in Dubai from March 23 to 27, 2026, after parts of the UAE received more than 100 mm of precipitation, The Watchers reported. One northern station saw 244 mm – over double the annual average – following a March 19 warning from the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, with crews deployed to clear roads and no fatalities recorded, The Guardian stated.

The flooding affected roads and low-lying areas, stranding vehicles and slowing commutes in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates. The National posted on X on March 27 that widespread flooding had occurred after overnight downpours and that municipal crews were pumping water and clearing routes. Weather-related risks also extended to flight schedules at UAE airports, The Watchers noted in its coverage.

This latest episode echoes the record rainfall of April 2024, when the National Center of Meteorology recorded over 250 mm in 24 hours in the UAE, an event described as the heaviest in 75 years. That storm led to widespread flooding across all emirates and significant airport disruptions at Dubai International, according to an ECMWF newsletter. The 2026 rains accumulated over several days rather than in a single deluge.

Several UAE stations registered more than 100 mm during the March event, The Guardian reported. National Center of Meteorology figures show the country’s arid regions typically receive 60 to 100 mm of rain annually. The thunderstorms also brought hail and gusty winds, compounding the challenges for emergency responders.

Authorities implemented drainage operations to manage water buildup and sustain critical infrastructure, a The Watchers assessment found. No fatalities or large-scale structural damage resulted from the flooding. The proactive coordination among agencies helped limit the overall impact.

The Watchers indicated that the event, though disruptive to daily transport, was managed effectively due to prior warnings issued by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority. The National Center of Meteorology has documented climate trends that include potential increases in rainfall intensity across the region. Infrastructure enhancements following the 2024 floods aided in the response this time, according to analysis in The National.
