Major General Turki Al-Malki the official spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen stated that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed the drone before it could enter the capital area. The Saudi Press Agency distributed the announcement which attributed the launch to the Houthi militia. Coalition officials reported no resulting casualties or material damage from the incident.
This development forms part of an intensified series of aerial assaults on Saudi territory that have occurred throughout October. Al Jazeera reported that coalition units had neutralized four drones across Riyadh the Eastern Province and southern areas in one 24-hour period earlier in the month. The Saudi Press Agency has carried multiple similar statements from Al-Malki in recent weeks detailing interceptions of both drones and missiles.
Al Arabiya English reported that a separate Houthi ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh prompted civil defense warnings to residents before it too was destroyed. The coalition has conducted retaliatory strikes against facilities in Sanaa and other Yemeni provinces that it says support the militia’s operations. Arab News placed the death toll from a prior strike on King Khalid International Airport at 13 people with operations at the facility suspended afterward.
Xinhua news service noted that the airport has faced at least 20 attempted attacks since early October as part of the renewed Houthi campaign. Khaleej Times reported that the coalition which first intervened in Yemen in 2015 to support the recognized government has maintained defensive operations along the border and in Yemeni airspace. The spokesperson has issued updates via social media detailing each successful interception as they occur.
A report from Asharq Al-Awsat indicated that the latest incidents coincide with Egyptian offers to provide additional support to Saudi security efforts if requested. Coalition statements have consistently described the Houthi actions as terrorist attempts to target civilians and civilian infrastructure. The Saudi Civil Defense authority has responded to several debris falls from interceptions in residential zones without recording injuries.
