Health officials in Gaza said Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least four Palestinians in separate incidents across the enclave on October 20, according to a Reuters dispatch from Cairo. Medics reported that an airstrike hit an apartment in Gaza City and killed Akram Yassin along with his wife Dina Abu Baker. The deaths formed part of a broader pattern of violence that has continued despite a ceasefire in place since last year.
The Israeli military said in a statement that Yassin served as a senior official in Hamas’s general security apparatus tasked with protecting the group’s leaders. Officials released the identification several hours after the strike occurred in the densely populated urban area. The apparatus has drawn repeated Israeli targeting amid ongoing operations against the militant group.
Medics told Reuters that a 17-year-old boy died from Israeli gunfire near the Qizan Al-Najar neighbourhood in Khan Younis in the south of the territory. Another Palestinian was killed by gunfire in the Zeitoun suburb east of Gaza City on the same day. These additional fatalities brought the confirmed toll from the day’s events to at least four.
Gaza health officials have said at least 1,500 Palestinians have died from Israeli fire since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025. Israel has reported that four of its soldiers were killed by militants in Gaza during the same period. The figures underscore persistent friction between the two sides even after the truce halted full-scale fighting.
Palestinian authorities have put the overall death toll from Israel’s military campaign in Gaza at more than 74,000 since the conflict escalated. The violence followed a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, that Israeli officials said killed about 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostage. Both sides have accused each other of repeated ceasefire violations in the months since the agreement.
Reuters reported that the latest incidents occurred against a backdrop of stalled progress toward deeper implementation of the truce terms. Mediators have continued efforts to reinforce the deal amid the sporadic violence. Health officials continue to document casualties from strikes and ground fire in multiple areas of the Gaza Strip.
