Reuters reported that Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for a drone strike on the Aramco facility in Jazan on the same day. The Iran-backed group has issued similar claims regarding Saudi energy infrastructure throughout the ongoing regional conflict. The Jazan refinery has a capacity of 400,000 barrels per day according to reports from News of Bahrain and forms a notable part of Saudi Aramco’s downstream network along the Red Sea coast. A 2019 strike on Aramco’s Abqaiq processing plant, which contemporary Reuters reporting linked to Houthi claims at the time, temporarily disrupted about half of Saudi oil output before operations recovered. Saudi authorities have since focused on reinforcing protections across energy installations in response to such events. The latest incident at Jazan occurs against this history of declared threats to the sector though the ministry has released no further details on causation or impact.
