The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate said in a statement that the drones struck at approximately 12:28 a.m. in the Pirmam district of Erbil province. No human casualties or major damage resulted from the two assaults, the directorate added. The statement identified the launches as originating from across the Iranian border and held those responsible fully accountable for the consequences.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani addressed the incident directly in a post on X. “Following an investigation by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit, my personal office and the home of the head of the Security and Intelligence Agency were targeted by Iranian drone attacks earlier today,” he wrote. Barzani condemned the strikes as reckless and uncontrollable while stressing that they would not deter the regional government from fulfilling its duties to protect residents.
According to the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, the attacks constituted unacceptable aggression that threatened the stability of the Kurdistan Region. The directorate reiterated that the regional administration would persist in its efforts to safeguard the population and key infrastructure despite the incidents. Investigations remained underway on August 17 to determine further details about the operation.
This incident forms part of a series of drone-related events affecting the region in recent days. Coalition forces intercepted three explosive drones over Erbil less than a week earlier, Kurdistan24 reported. Authorities in Erbil have warned repeatedly that such violations endanger civilian security as well as the region’s economic and energy assets.
The strikes also follow similar actions reported in late March 2026 against other senior Kurdish figures, according to regional security accounts. Those prior incidents similarly involved cross-border threats and prompted heightened alerts across the autonomous area. The latest targets, including the prime minister’s private office and the intelligence chief’s home, have amplified concerns over airspace vulnerabilities.
The Parastin Agency functions as the Kurdistan Regional Government’s main security and intelligence body. Its director’s residence being hit alongside the prime minister’s office highlighted the coordinated nature of the assault, the Counter-Terrorism Directorate statement showed. No organization had claimed responsibility for the attacks by midday on August 17.
