Kuwait became a member of the Committee on Space Research on March 14, 2026, with the Kuwait National Space Research Center designated as its national scientific institute, according to an announcement on the COSPAR website. The organization, which furthers research, exploration and the peaceful use of outer space through international cooperation, extended a warm welcome to Kuwait and its space science community. This accession comes as the 46th COSPAR Scientific Assembly is scheduled for Aug. 1-9 in Florence, Italy, per the event’s official site.
The COSPAR announcement highlighted the milestone as a step for Kuwaiti participation in global space efforts. The Kuwait National Space Research Center will serve as the primary point of contact for the country’s involvement in the committee’s activities. COSPAR maintains multiple scientific commissions focused on areas such as Earth science, planetary exploration and space physics, the organization’s structure shows.
Kuwait’s entry aligns with its broader push to develop national space capabilities, a Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority overview indicated. The center’s role as the adhering institution positions Kuwait to engage in COSPAR’s capacity-building workshops, awards programs and co-sponsored meetings. Earlier this year, COSPAR also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Open Lunar Foundation on March 31, the committee reported separately.
The committee organizes biennial scientific assemblies that bring together researchers from around the world, with the 47th edition set for Dubai in July 2028, according to COSPAR’s event listings. Kuwait’s membership adds to the roster of adhering nations and institutions contributing to international space data sharing and policy discussions. Recent COSPAR news included the release of new adhering member institution reports on June 12, 2026, and an open letter on science in multilateralism issued four days later.
COSPAR traces its origins to 1958 and operates under the International Science Council, its governance documents state. The organization presents awards such as the COSPAR International Cooperation Medal and Outstanding Paper Awards for Young Scientists, with the 2025 recipients recognized in April 2026. Panels on topics including space weather and planetary protection form part of its ongoing work, COSPAR materials detail.
In parallel developments, Kuwait has pursued space technology investments, including potential ties to regional AI and infrastructure projects that could support data handling for space applications, a Semafor report from June noted without direct COSPAR linkage. The committee’s latest updates also covered participation in the 41st Space Symposium in May and special issues of its Advances in Space Research journal. Kuwaiti officials have framed the membership as reinforcing the country’s scientific standing on the global stage.
