Al Jazeera Director General Urges Ethical Technology Ties to Counter Polarisation

Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani, director general of Al Jazeera Media Network, said journalism has acquired renewed importance as algorithmic systems and attention-based models have fuelled polarisation, as he addressed Web Summit Qatar on February 3, 2026. The Doha-based executive unveiled the Core Project, a re-evaluation of the network’s purpose in the digital age that aims to automate repetitive tasks and free journalists for contextual analysis. He called for technology companies to redesign platforms that prioritise shock and outrage, according to his remarks at the summit in the Qatari capital.

Sheikh Nasser warned that algorithmic systems have built echo chambers isolating people from diverse narratives and the complexity of global events. A Northeastern University study released in November 2025 found that social media algorithms can shift users’ partisan feelings in one week by an amount typically observed over three years in the United States. He argued that the core challenge today is not accessing information but interpreting its overabundance, a point he made while speaking to an audience at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center.

The director general described journalism as a force capable of adding context to events, connecting voices and highlighting human stories rather than opposing technological progress. Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism research from 2025 showed that 52 percent of respondents in the United States and 63 percent in the United Kingdom expressed discomfort with news produced mostly by artificial intelligence. Sheikh Nasser stressed that the evolution of journalism remains intertwined with changes from digital platforms and AI in the public sphere.

Al Jazeera has launched the Core Project to review its fundamental journalistic ideas and combine technology with ethical responsibility, according to Sheikh Nasser. The initiative centres on three principles focused on the immediate now, the deeper meaning behind events and the role of people as conscious actors rather than passive data points. It seeks to equip reporters with tools for responsible breaking-news coverage, fact separation from bias and objective understanding, he explained.

While speed and accuracy remain essential, the now alone cannot define coverage, Sheikh Nasser noted in his remarks. Journalism must link events to root causes to deliver meaning and restore context in fragmented information environments. The project redefines audiences as capable of responsible engagement with the world, moving beyond metrics that treat them as mere consumers.

Sheikh Nasser concluded his address with an appeal to technology leaders at the summit for a partnership between responsible journalism and ethical technology to bridge divides. “The challenge we face today is not a battle between journalism and technology,” he said. “It is rather an opportunity to align them through shared responsibility, to bridge divides and empower a world capable of dialogue.”

The third edition of Web Summit Qatar opened days earlier with remarks from Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, who highlighted historical contributions to innovation such as the origins of the word algorithm with ninth-century Persian mathematician Al-Khwarizmi. Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani pointed to the launch of Qatar’s national AI company Qai the previous year and a $2 billion expansion of the Qatar Investment Authority’s venture capital programme. Organisers reported that the 2026 event drew more than 30,000 attendees, 1,637 startups and 931 investors from 127 countries.
