The Palestinian news agency WAFA cited medical sources on July 16 in reporting that Israeli shelling had killed three Palestinians and wounded several others in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood and Al-Tuffah area. Emergency responders moved the deceased and injured to hospitals in the area. The report offered limited additional information on the circumstances of the strike.

WAFA has issued numerous similar updates in recent months detailing casualties from strikes in various parts of the Gaza Strip. The agency relies on statements from hospital officials and rescue workers for its accounts of individual events. This latest dispatch from the agency adds to the flow of information coming out of the territory.

A WAFA report from July 15 conveyed the Palestinian health ministry’s updated count of 73,246 killed since October 7, 2023. The same bulletin listed 173,727 people as having been injured during that period. The ministry bases its statistics on information supplied by medical facilities throughout Gaza.

The ministry releases its data without separating civilian from military casualties. WAFA regularly publishes these compilations as they are issued. The July 15 revision incorporated 13 new fatalities and 18 wounded from the previous day.

Reports from WAFA have often referenced activity in the eastern Gaza City neighborhoods of Zeitoun and Al-Tuffah. Medical sources have provided the casualty information in those earlier stories as well. The areas have seen repeated mentions in dispatches about shelling and its effects on residents.

WAFA served as the originating source for the account of the July 16 shelling in Gaza City. Regional publications drew on the agency’s dispatch for their own stories. The Palestinian news agency continues to cover daily developments in the ongoing conflict.
