Saudi Arabia designated 2026 as the Year of Artificial Intelligence following cabinet approval on March 10, 2026, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority announced while launching an official logo for the yearlong focus. The logo blends cultural heritage with technological symbolism and the announcement highlights the Kingdom’s 14th place ranking in the 2025 Global AI Index along with significant investments in the sector.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that the logo includes a palm tree to represent the national emblem and cultural heritage alongside the letters AI to emphasize innovation and digital inclusion central to Vision 2030. Green in the design symbolizes the Saudi flag while blue denotes digital technology and future advancement. The initiative comes with the official hashtag #SaudiAIYear to encourage public engagement.
Muhammad Khurram Khan, a professor of cybersecurity at King Saud University, told Arab News the designation represents a strategic milestone in the Kingdom’s digital transformation under Vision 2030. “Over the past several years, SDAIA has successfully moved the national AI agenda from planning to large-scale implementation,” he said. The progress is evident in the rapid rise in global AI rankings, significant investment in emerging technologies and development of advanced infrastructure such as national data platforms and large-scale data centers, Khan added.
According to Tortoise Media’s Global AI Index the Kingdom ranked 14th overall in 2025 and maintained a leading position in the Arab world for AI model development. Government spending on emerging technologies rose by more than 56 percent in 2024 while AI companies secured $9.1 billion in funding, SDAIA figures show. A Stanford HAI assessment found that Saudi Arabia’s Project Transcendence constitutes a $100 billion initiative supporting these ambitions.
SDAIA President Abdullah bin Sharaf Al-Ghamdi welcomed the cabinet’s decision, saying it reflects Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision to strengthen the Kingdom’s global standing in advanced technologies. He described it as an important step toward creating national momentum around innovation and the role of artificial intelligence in shaping a smarter and more sustainable future. The authority’s National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence rests on six pillars ranging from competencies and policies to investment and ecosystem development.
Since its founding in 2019 SDAIA has overseen a shift to implementation that includes the Shaheen III supercomputer, the Hexagon data center with 480 megawatts of capacity described by the authority as the world’s largest government data facility and a National Data Lake linking more than 430 government systems. More than 11,000 AI specialists have received training and the SAMAI program has attracted over one million participants, the authority reported. Saudi Arabia also became the first Arab nation to join the Global Partnership on AI and hosts the UNESCO-sponsored International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics in Riyadh.
Oxford Insights’ 2025 Government AI Readiness Index ranked Saudi Arabia first in the Middle East and North Africa. The Global AI Show is scheduled to take place in Riyadh from June 29 to 30, 2026, according to the event organizers.
