The joint GCC-US ministerial meeting commenced in Manama on June 25, 2026, according to the Gulf Times, which cited QNA, as foreign ministers from the six member states and the United States gathered in the Bahraini capital to advance their strategic dialogue on regional security, economic cooperation and Middle East stability. The session builds upon previous gatherings that have reinforced the long-standing partnership between the GCC and Washington through working groups and joint commitments.

The Gulf Cooperation Council was established in Riyadh in May 1981 by the six member states to achieve unity based on common objectives, Britannica reported. The alliance has since focused on both economic integration and security coordination, including the creation of the Peninsula Shield Force in 1984. A joint statement from the US State Department following the 2024 ministerial meeting in New York underlined the shared commitment to strengthening consultation in all fields.

US Secretary of State meetings with GCC counterparts have consistently addressed Iran’s regional activities and threats to navigation, the 2024 joint statement indicated. Ministers commended working groups on integrated air and missile defense as well as maritime security during the 2023 Riyadh gathering, according to US government records. The latest session in Manama follows similar meetings held in various locations over the past several years.

Bahrain has played a prominent role in hosting GCC-related events, with its foreign minister chairing the Ministerial Council for the current period, the GCC Secretariat noted in June 2026 announcements. The 167th GCC Ministerial Council meeting took place in Manama earlier this month and included discussions on regional developments. That session also featured a strategic dialogue with Canada, demonstrating the bloc’s active diplomatic calendar.

Economic cooperation forms a key pillar of the GCC-US relationship, with past dialogues exploring investment environments and energy policies, a 2016 White House fact sheet on the partnership detailed. The Camp David Summit in 2015 laid groundwork for enhanced collaboration in countering common threats including ISIL, according to archived US administration documents. These foundations have supported ongoing ministerial engagements that adapt to evolving regional dynamics.

In September 2025, a GCC-UK ministerial meeting acknowledged US-led efforts to facilitate dialogue and promote stability in areas such as Sudan, a GCC Secretariat statement showed. Similar recognition of American contributions has appeared in multiple GCC joint communiques over recent years. The Manama meeting is anticipated to produce coordinated positions on current challenges facing the Gulf region.

GCC Secretary General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi has regularly participated in these ministerial forums, where he has highlighted the importance of collective action, according to GCC media releases. The US maintains robust defense and economic ties with individual GCC countries in addition to the multilateral track. This dual approach has enabled comprehensive coverage of issues ranging from counterterrorism to trade facilitation.
