The German Football Association announced Friday that it had appointed Jurgen Klopp as the new head coach of the senior national team. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf told a press conference in Frankfurt that the association was delighted to introduce the experienced tactician as Nagelsmann’s successor. Klopp signed a contract running until the summer of 2030 which will cover the next FIFA World Cup hosted by Morocco Spain and Portugal. He will officially begin his duties on Aug. 15 according to the announcement from the governing body.

The appointment follows Germany’s round-of-32 exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by the United States Canada and Mexico. ESPN statistics show the team topped its group with a 7-1 win over Curacao a 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast and a 2-1 defeat to Ecuador before falling 4-3 on penalties to Paraguay after a 1-1 draw.[[1]](https://www.espn.com/soccer/team/results/_/id/481/league/FIFA.WORLD) Nagelsmann who had extended his deal until 2028 reached an agreement with the DFB to depart days after the squad returned home a development reported by DW.[[2]](https://www.dw.com/en/the-downfall-julian-nagelsmann-out-as-germany-coach/a-77797146) The result added to recent tournament disappointments for the four-time world champions.

FIFA records list Germany as one of the tournament’s most decorated sides with titles in 1954 1974 1990 and 2014.[[3]](https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026/articles/germany-team-profile-history) The side however suffered group-stage eliminations at both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups according to official tournament histories. A Bleacher Report overview noted the pattern of early exits that has persisted since the 2014 triumph in Brazil.[[4]](https://www.facebook.com/BleacherReportFootball/posts/germany-at-the-world-cup-since-winning-the-2014-final2018-group-stage-2022-group/1636201304529435/)

Klopp arrives with an extensive managerial resume that includes multiple major trophies. He led Borussia Dortmund to Bundesliga and German Cup honors before spending nine seasons at Liverpool where he claimed the 2019 UEFA Champions League and 2020 Premier League title among other honors. Transfermarkt data places his overall win rate across club careers at a level that underscores his reputation as one of Germany’s most successful coaches in recent decades.

Neuendorf highlighted Klopp’s readiness to assume the role and steer the program forward. The president indicated that the August 15 start date would provide time to assess the squad ahead of upcoming international fixtures. Such preparation forms a key part of the federation’s plan to rebuild momentum after the North American tournament.

Nagelsmann’s tenure which started in September 2023 encompassed 37 matches with 23 victories according to figures compiled by Transfermarkt.[[5]](https://www.transfermarkt.us/julian-nagelsmann/profil/trainer/8402) He guided the team to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship on home soil before the contract extension that was later cut short. The DFB’s choice of Klopp as replacement signals an emphasis on proven leadership as the national side targets improved performances at the 2030 World Cup.
