Iranian strikes hit several Kuwaiti power and water plants on Monday causing fires and forcing authorities to renew appeals for lower energy consumption to keep the national grid operational around the clock according to an AFP report published that week. The attacks marked the fourth in as many days on such infrastructure with Tehran earlier claiming its actions targeted United States assets in the Gulf state. Kuwaiti officials described the incidents as unjust aggression against civilian facilities while residents reported hearing sirens and explosions that have become part of daily life since the broader conflict escalated.

Nasser Al-Dhafiri a civil servant in his forties told AFP he and fellow citizens face immense psychological pressure from the combination of wartime strikes and the need to ration air conditioning in one of the world’s hottest countries. The civil servant added that ongoing attacks on infrastructure particularly power plants have created anxiety and confusion that disrupt normal routines. Al-Dhafiri noted that many Kuwaitis now view preservation of essential services as a collective duty amid the conflict that began with US-Israeli action against Iran in late February and has since drawn in Gulf targets after a shaky ceasefire collapsed.

Electricity ministry spokeswoman Fatima Hayat hailed widespread public responsiveness that reduced consumption below projected levels according to the AFP dispatch. The ministry said this compliance enabled it to overcome a difficult period for the electrical grid and maintain service stability despite the damage from strikes. Hayat’s assessment came as the government continued measures first introduced in May when working hours for public employees were shortened to six daily to ease summer strain on networks Gulf News reported at the time.

Studies highlighted by Kuwait Times place the country’s average electricity consumption at roughly 40 kilowatt-hours per person each day among the highest rates globally and driven largely by air conditioning demand that peaks in summer months. The Ministry of Electricity Water and Renewable Energy has repeatedly warned that extreme heat combined with any infrastructure disruption can overwhelm generating capacity as occurred in 2024 when temporary power cuts were scheduled in several areas Al-Monitor reported then. Current events have compounded those longstanding pressures with attacks also affecting desalination units that supply nearly 90 percent of Kuwait’s fresh water according to regional conflict coverage by France 24.

AFP noted that Kuwait and Bahrain have emerged as primary Iranian targets in the Gulf since the ceasefire breakdown with plumes of smoke visible over sites such as Mangaf following repeated hits on power generation and water facilities. Al Jazeera footage and reporting confirmed similar strikes earlier in the week that prompted immediate calls for conservation to prevent cascading failures. The pattern reflects escalation in which both sides have struck energy infrastructure raising concerns about wider disruptions to regional supply chains.

Public adherence to the conservation appeal has so far helped stabilise supply even as fears of prolonged outages persist among the population. The electricity ministry continues to monitor grid performance and update residents on developments through official channels. Officials have stopped short of imposing mandatory rationing but stressed that voluntary reductions remain essential while repairs to damaged plants proceed.
