For many people the phone is the first thing they reach for in the morning and the last thing they put down at night. In one of the most connected countries in the world, that habit is close to universal, and a growing number of residents say it has started to feel like too much.

The scale is striking. At the start of 2025 Kuwait counted 4.94 million internet users, a penetration rate of 99 percent, alongside 3.99 million social media accounts, roughly 80 percent of the population, according to DataReportal. Across the Middle East and North Africa, social media users average close to three hours a day on those platforms, above the global average, the World Happiness Report notes. Worldwide, total daily screen time now sits around six hours and forty minutes.

The strain that comes with it is well documented. Health researchers have linked heavy screen use, particularly late at night, to disrupted sleep, weaker concentration, and higher levels of anxiety. The behaviour is often automatic rather than chosen. Surveys find the average person checks their phone dozens of times a day, around half of users scroll out of pure habit, and a majority describe themselves as overly dependent on their devices.

Most people already sense this. In one widely cited survey, 53 percent of users said they wanted to cut down their phone use. Yet average screen time has not fallen, and roughly half of younger adults keep a screen-limiting app installed that does little to change how they actually behave. Wanting to switch off, it turns out, is the easy part.

This is the problem a concept called Data Detox sets out to address. The idea is straightforward. Rather than only selling more data, a mobile operator encourages customers to spend time away from their screens and rewards them for doing it. A customer switches on detox mode in the app, steps away, and earns points for the time spent offline. Those points convert into something tangible, such as a free package or account credit.

The shift is in the incentive. Most digital wellbeing tools rely on willpower alone, which is exactly where they tend to fail. Attaching a small, concrete reward to time spent offline gives people a reason to follow through, and turns switching off from a private act of discipline into something a brand actively supports.

For Virgin Mobile, the approach sits comfortably with a company that has built its name on treating customers as adults rather than squeezing them for every last minute. Whether paying people to disconnect genuinely helps them build healthier habits is a question only time will answer. But in a market where every operator competes to sell more, a brand asking customers to use a little less is, at the very least, starting a conversation worth having.
