Professor Dr Mohammed Abdulwahab al-Azzawi, an expert in total quality management who previously advised Qatar’s Ministry of Administrative Development and served as dean of the Institute of Accounting and Financial Studies at the University of Baghdad, has outlined the urgent need for Arab business schools to move beyond incremental curriculum updates. In an interview with Gulf Times, al-Azzawi drew on his participation in a feasibility study for a private university and visits to leading institutions across Europe and the Arab world to highlight widening disparities with global standards. He argued that academic thinking, teaching methodologies and leadership preparation all require reshaping to meet demands of the digital economy and the Fifth Industrial Revolution.
The professor stated that any successful shift must open with a comprehensive assessment of knowledge and technological shortcomings at each institution. Programmes would then be redesigned around disciplines including business analytics, fintech, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence applications in management. Faculty members require targeted training to build digital competencies while instruction transitions from lectures to hands-on projects, digital simulations and virtual environments that replicate corporate realities.
Al-Azzawi stressed the importance of forging strategic partnerships with industry leaders, technology companies, research centres and international universities to embed practical relevance. Such alliances would help align graduate skills with labour market expectations and deliver internationally benchmarked opportunities for students. Continuous faculty development in areas such as data analytics, cloud computing and responsible AI use must be paired with investments in smart infrastructure including advanced laboratories and real-time visualisation systems.
A five-stage framework proposed by al-Azzawi begins with institutional assessment and gap analysis before moving through curriculum redesign, faculty capacity building, pilot testing of new pathways and ongoing evaluation. Performance would be tracked against indicators such as graduate employability rates, employer feedback, research quality and attainment of international accreditation. The academic described digital transformation as a continuous process of adaptation rather than a finite project.
A World Economic Forum assessment of executive opinion in 2025 found that only two out of every 10 business leaders believe current education systems develop AI and data skills effectively. The forum’s related reporting on the Middle East and North Africa has repeatedly flagged mismatches between traditional Arab higher education models and fast-evolving industry requirements. World Bank analysis prepared for its 2026 World Development Report similarly calls for expanded STEM education, AI-specific competencies and closer industry-academic collaboration to support technology adoption across developing regions including Arab states.
UNESCO documentation on digital transformation in higher education and technical training across nine Arab countries has emphasised the role of AI and cloud tools in fostering inclusive, future-oriented learning environments. The organisation’s reviews point to uneven progress in bridging infrastructure and pedagogical gaps in the region. Al-Azzawi concluded his assessment by noting that early adopters of these changes stand to gain significant advantages, stating, “The universities that begin this transformation today will be the ones best positioned to lead tomorrow’s knowledge-driven economy.”
