The Five Eyes spy alliance warned on June 23, 2026, that frontier artificial intelligence could outpace prevailing cybersecurity standards in months rather than years. A joint statement from the intelligence agencies of the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand highlighted how AI lowers barriers for malicious actors while increasing the speed and complexity of attacks. “The rapid pace of frontier AI development means cyber risk assumptions can become outdated in months, not years,” the advisory stated, calling for immediate action to prepare for inevitable breaches.

The statement emphasised that preparedness helps contain incidents quickly and prevents escalation into major operational and financial crises. It referenced US startup Anthropic’s Mythos models, which in April showcased unprecedented abilities to discover software vulnerabilities. Anthropic subsequently suspended access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 following a US government national security directive that barred foreign nationals from using the systems, as the company announced this month.

According to the Five Eyes advisory, organisations should integrate AI tools into security operations, update legacy systems and limit access to critical assets as part of a broader defence strategy. The guidance also includes reducing attack surfaces, accelerating patching cycles and fostering greater overall resilience against AI-augmented threats. These measures respond to a landscape where offensive capabilities are advancing faster than traditional defences can adapt.

A World Economic Forum survey for its Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 revealed that 87 percent of executives view AI-related vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing cyber risk, with the proportion of firms assessing AI tool security rising from 37 percent in 2025 to 64 percent.

CrowdStrike’s 2026 Global Threat Report recorded an 89 percent surge in attacks involving AI-enabled adversaries during the period covered, alongside a 42 percent increase in the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities prior to their disclosure. Industry projections place the annual cost of global cybercrime at 10.5 trillion dollars in 2026. Such figures illustrate the scale of the challenge the intelligence alliance has underscored.

The joint statement aligns with assessments from multiple cybersecurity bodies that AI acts as a force multiplier for both attackers and defenders. In the Anthropic case, the US order was triggered by concerns over potential jailbreaking of the models’ safeguards, although the company maintained that the risks were comparable to those of other deployed systems. The episode underscores the rapid evolution of capabilities that prompted the Five Eyes to shift its warning timeline from years to months.
