Qatar News Agency reported that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah in Istanbul on Monday. The encounter took place on the sidelines of the first Strategic Political and Defense Committee meeting under the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement. The committee aims to set the strategic direction for future activities under the pact. It will address global security matters and explore opportunities to strengthen defence capabilities across the participating states.
The agency added that the gathering will also seek to enhance interoperability among the armed forces of Turkiye Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The Makkah Joint Defense Agreement was signed on August 7 in the Saudi city of Makkah by the leaders of the three countries. This trilateral framework commits the parties to treat an attack on one as an attack on all three.
According to a Reuters dispatch carried by Dawn on August 14 Turkiye’s defence ministry outlined plans for joint exercises involving all branches of the military. The pact also envisions deeper cooperation in defence industries including joint production and technology sharing. Priorities include unmanned and autonomous systems electronic warfare and artificial intelligence applications. The ministry described the accord as placing defence ties on a more institutional basis.
The Print newspaper reported that the agreement followed nearly a year of negotiations and carries symbolic weight as it was inked in Mecca. Saudi Arabia’s Minister for Public Diplomacy described it as the culmination of years of strategic cooperation among the three nations. He stressed that the pact would not affect existing alliances with other partners in the Gulf and beyond.
Arab News reported on August 9 that the participating countries bring complementary strengths to the partnership with Turkiye contributing its NATO experience and advanced industry. Pakistan offers extensive military expertise while Saudi Arabia provides economic resources and strategic location. The agreement was signed following a summit at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah.
Fidan and Prince Faisal’s bilateral meeting allowed for direct coordination as the committee commences its work QNA stated. The discussions form part of ongoing efforts to translate the leaders’ agreement into practical collaboration. Officials from the three countries are expected to maintain high-level engagement to advance the shared security objectives.
