Qatar News Agency reported that Spain advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Austria 3-0 in their Round of 32 match at Los Angeles Stadium on July 3. Mikel Oyarzabal scored in the 36th and 89th minutes while Pedro Porro added a goal in the 66th minute. The 2010 World Cup champions took a 1-0 lead into halftime and maintained their tempo after the break to secure the comfortable victory. Spain benefited from a well-organized team effort throughout the contest.

Al Jazeera reported that Spain achieved five consecutive clean sheets in the tournament with goalkeeper Unai Simon denying Austria’s main threats led by striker Marko Arnautovic. ESPN noted that the result marked Spain’s first World Cup knockout stage win since their 2010 title success. The Spanish side featured strong contributions from Lamine Yamal, Rodrigo, Marc Cucurella and Alex Baena. Reports from The Athletic placed Spain’s expected goals total at 2.8 against Austria’s 0.32.

FIFA outlined that Austria had qualified for the knockout rounds after a 3-3 draw with Algeria in the group stage that allowed them to finish second in their pool. The Austrian team created few clear chances against Spain’s solid defense according to Qatar News Agency. Ralf Rangnick’s side endured their first World Cup knockout match in 72 years as detailed by Al Jazeera. Spain had topped Group H ahead of Uruguay following an opening draw with Cape Verde and a win over Saudi Arabia according to ESPN.

Qatar News Agency stated that Spain will next face the winner of the Croatia versus Portugal Round of 32 match. The subsequent round of 16 fixture is scheduled for July 6 in Dallas according to reports from ESPN. Luis de la Fuente’s Spanish team entered the knockout stage as one of the tournament favorites. Austria had opened their group campaign with a win over Jordan before losses to stronger opponents as outlined by FIFA.

A report from Olympics.com indicated that Oyarzabal’s brace highlighted the attacking options available to Spain as they progress further in the competition. The European champions had built momentum through the group phase with their defense recording consistent shutouts. Multiple outlets including The New York Times described the performance as stylish in overcoming the Austrian challenge. The result sets up a challenging round of 16 tie for the Spanish squad.
