The Hong Kong Tourism Board said in a statement that the 108th Lions International Convention opened with more than 10000 representatives in attendance and is projected to draw around 17000 delegates from across the globe. The event is underway at AsiaWorld-Expo from July 3 to 7 as one of the largest service club gatherings of its kind. Hong Kong’s selection for a third time highlights its established reputation for managing major international assemblies, the board reported. The statement positioned the convention as further evidence of the city’s strengths in hosting world-scale events.

Hong Kong first hosted the Lions International Convention in 1992 and again in 2005, placing it among the small number of cities granted the opportunity three times. Lions Clubs International data places the organization’s membership at 1.4 million people organized into 50000 clubs that operate in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. The group was founded in 1917 and has focused on community service and humanitarian projects throughout its history.

HKTB Chairman Dr Peter Lam stated in the announcement that the board is delighted to partner again with Lions Clubs International District 303 Hong Kong and Macao to host the convention. “This not only affirms Hong Kong’s position as the world’s meeting place and a top MICE destination, but also fully demonstrates the integrated strengths of our MICE infrastructure, aviation, tourism and hospitality industries,” Lam said. The board has arranged dedicated itineraries and worked with trade partners to provide transport options, tickets and discounts so participants can explore the city’s cultural and tourism offerings.

Lions Honorary Chairman and Past International President Dr Tam Wing-kun described Hong Kong as an ideal host due to its blend of cultures and advanced facilities. “The convention will provide a good platform for the future development of Lionism,” Tam said in the statement. “Participants will also have the opportunity to taste Hong Kong’s cuisine and experience its culture. I am confident that after the convention, they will all become good promoters of Hong Kong.”

Organizers are attempting a Tai Chi world record by having thousands practice simultaneously during the gathering to promote physical exercise and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The convention’s official website states that citizens of nearly 170 countries do not require a visa to enter Hong Kong, easing attendance for global members. Delegates are also invited to view the city’s skyline and light show from the harbor, take ferries to Macau and visit night markets as part of the planned experiences.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board noted that the event continues its efforts to attract major MICE gatherings and reinforce the city’s competitive position in the sector. Additional programming includes opportunities for networking among the worldwide Lions membership focused on service initiatives. The gathering concludes on July 7 after a week of sessions and side events at the AsiaWorld-Expo venue.
