The Gaza Health Ministry reported on June 21, 2026, that at least 73,032 Palestinians have been killed and 173,357 others injured since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023. Authorities said hospitals across Gaza received nine bodies and 41 wounded over the previous 24 hours, while many additional victims remained under rubble or beyond the reach of rescue teams. More than 1,000 Palestinians have died since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect in October 2025, according to the same official count.

The ministry’s statement, as carried by Gulf Times, listed 1,021 deaths and 3,249 injuries in the post-ceasefire period along with the recovery of 784 bodies from debris. Reuters reported three days earlier that the toll from Israeli fire since the truce had passed 1,000. NPR noted that the ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its statistics.

The Gaza Health Ministry’s records are staffed by medical professionals and viewed as generally reliable by the international community, multiple outlets including AP have reported. A United Nations report from May 2026 cited a slightly lower figure of 72,769 Palestinian deaths in Gaza up to that point. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has separately tracked 45 Palestinian deaths in the West Bank so far in 2026.

Analyses suggest the full toll may exceed official counts because of unrecovered bodies and indirect fatalities. A study published in The Lancet estimated 75,200 violent deaths between October 2023 and January 2025, a number 35 percent higher than the ministry’s contemporaneous tally. Researchers attributed the gap to bodies still under rubble and excess deaths linked to the conflict’s broader effects.

International access constraints have complicated independent verification of the numbers on the ground. The ministry continues to compile data from functioning hospitals despite damaged infrastructure across the enclave. Officials have repeatedly warned that the true number of dead is likely higher than what has been recovered so far.
