Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki stated that Saudi air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi militia toward Riyadh the Saudi Press Agency reported Tuesday. Al-Malki described the launch as an attack by what the coalition terms the terrorist Houthi militia aimed at the capital where more than eight million citizens and residents live. The statement emphasized that such actions reflect the militia’s persistence in targeting civilians and civilian objects.

Saudi civil defence authorities activated the national early warning platform issuing alerts for Riyadh and surrounding governorates before residents heard multiple loud blasts across the city. Officials later confirmed that the danger had passed after the interception while urging the public to adhere to instructions from competent authorities. In similar past incidents falling debris from intercepted projectiles has caused limited material damage to nearby structures though no casualties were immediately reported from this event.

This latest interception forms part of a pattern of Houthi attacks that has intensified since the Yemeni civil war escalated anew in July 2026 a Channel News Asia assessment found. The Iran-aligned group has directed numerous missiles and drones at Saudi airports oil facilities and urban centers in the weeks since. Al Jazeera reported that one strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport earlier this month killed 14 people and injured hundreds more according to Saudi authorities.

The coalition has announced multiple successful defenses in recent days with Al-Malki previously detailing the interception of ballistic missiles and drones targeting areas including Khamis Mushait and Yanbu. Saudi officials have repeatedly characterized these Houthi operations as blatant violations of international humanitarian law that endanger civilians and travelers. The spokesman has noted that the kingdom’s air defense systems have demonstrated high efficiency in neutralizing such threats while joint forces continue operations to dismantle the militia’s launch platforms and storage sites.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea has claimed in statements covered by Al Jazeera that the group carried out strikes on Aramco facilities in Dhahran and Riyadh as well as King Khalid International Airport in retaliation for Saudi actions. Sarea has also warned international airlines to avoid Saudi airspace except over Mecca and Medina asserting that any other flights could become targets. Independent verification of the precise targets and outcomes of these claimed attacks has remained limited.

Aviation operations at King Khalid International Airport have faced major disruptions with thousands of flights canceled across Saudi airports since the initial deadly attacks earlier in October Cirium flight data showed. Authorities have maintained closures for safety assessments following the incidents that also affected other facilities. The UN Security Council has condemned the Houthi strikes on civilian aviation infrastructure a separate dispatch from Channel News Asia indicated.
