The Saudi Civil Defence activated the National Early Warning Platform for Mecca City, Jeddah Governorate and Taif Governorate on Tuesday to alert residents of a potential danger. In a series of posts on its official X account, the authority instructed the public to remain calm, move to the nearest safe indoor location and stay away from windows, doors, balconies and rooftops. All-clear messages followed shortly afterward for each area, advising continued compliance with civil defence guidance, avoidance of gatherings or filming and use of the 911 emergency number if needed.

Saudi Civil Defence reported that similar paired alerts and rescissions were sent for the three locations within a span of minutes, consistent with procedures used during periods of heightened cross-border risk. The warning for Mecca represented the first such alert issued for the holy city since the current phase of regional conflict began. Residents across the affected governorates were directed to follow official updates exclusively and to pull over safely if driving upon receiving the notification.

A series of ballistic missile and drone attacks launched from Yemen the previous day injured 13 civilians in southern Saudi Arabia, according to the Saudi-led coalition. Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Maliki stated that the strikes on Monday had targeted civilian objects in Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif, damaging seven homes and two vehicles. The coalition attributed the incidents to the Iran-aligned Houthis and pledged a firm response to safeguard sovereignty and civilian areas.

Reuters reported that the Tuesday alerts coincided with an uptick in Houthi operations along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including advances toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait that have raised concerns over shipping and energy infrastructure. The National Early Warning Platform has seen repeated use in recent months for comparable threats in western and southern Saudi locations such as Yanbu, Abha and Jazan. In each prior instance the authority issued rapid all-clear notices once immediate risks eased.

The Houthis claimed a military operation targeting a military airbase in Khamis Mushait on Monday, multiple regional outlets reported. Saudi Civil Defence has emphasised in its communications that such alerts form part of the kingdom’s emergency preparedness framework rather than confirmation of an active strike. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation and rely solely on verified authority channels during these episodes.

Saudi Civil Defence reiterated in follow-up posts that the danger had passed in Mecca, Jeddah Governorate and Taif Governorate while calling for ongoing vigilance. The sequence of alerts and clearances occurred against a backdrop of repeated Houthi claims of operations deep inside Saudi territory. Emergency response teams in the western provinces maintained elevated readiness following the notifications.
