Atletico Madrid announced on July 11, 2026, that it had reached an agreement with Sporting CP to sign Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand, who will join the first-team squad on a deal running until June 2031. The club confirmed the transfer in an official statement that highlighted the 27-year-old’s arrival after medical examinations in the Spanish capital. FOX Sports reported that the parties settled on a €45 million package that includes performance-related add-ons, concluding negotiations that had intensified in recent days. Hjulmand had become a central figure for Sporting after joining from Lecce in 2023.

During three seasons in Lisbon, Hjulmand recorded 141 appearances across all competitions, according to figures compiled by Transfermarkt. He contributed 10 goals and 12 assists while establishing himself as a defensive anchor and later club captain. ESPN statistics from his final campaign at Sporting showed three goals and four assists in league play, complemented by a strong average rating that reflected his consistency. The midfielder’s performances helped transform Sporting into consistent title challengers in the Primeira Liga.

Hjulmand played a key role in Sporting’s back-to-back league triumphs during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 seasons as well as their Portuguese Cup success in 2024-2025, Qatar News Agency noted in its coverage of the move. Those domestic victories marked the most successful stretch of his career to date and elevated his profile across European leagues. Prior to Portugal, he had spent two seasons in Italy’s Serie A with Lecce, where he made nearly 100 appearances after beginning his senior path in Austria and Denmark.

The acquisition strengthens Atletico Madrid’s midfield options as the club prepares for the new La Liga campaign and European competitions. It follows the side’s recent additions of South Korean international Kang-in Lee and defender Grimaldo, according to updates from Goal.com. At 27, Hjulmand arrives with significant experience and leadership credentials that are expected to bolster Diego Simeone’s squad in a position that has seen turnover in recent windows.

Hjulmand also captains the Denmark national team, for which he has earned 27 caps and scored once, Wikipedia data shows. His international profile and club-level pedigree align with Atletico’s pattern of recruiting proven performers from mid-tier European leagues. The five-year contract extension option embedded in the agreement underscores the club’s view of him as a long-term cornerstone in central midfield.
