NBK Launches Kuwait’s First Automated Safe Deposit Boxes for 24/7 Customer Access

National Bank of Kuwait announced on July 16, 2025, that it had launched automated safe deposit boxes, becoming the first bank in the country to grant customers 24-hour access to their valuables without staff intervention. The service lets users retrieve boxes via a smart automated mechanism that delivers them straight to a private room, the bank said in a statement on its website. This rollout occurs as Kuwait’s digital banking market, valued at $1.5 billion according to Ken Research, expands amid rising demand for convenient online financial tools.

The National Bank of Kuwait said in an announcement on its website that customers follow simple steps to access their safety deposit boxes around the clock and throughout the week at its headquarters. The modern system offers an enhanced experience with no employee involvement while the boxes themselves consist of fire-resistant materials to safeguard jewelry, documents and other items against fire or loss. The rental is available for one year to both individuals and companies at a fee of KD 250, with the entire process emphasizing confidentiality and user control over timing.

Hisham Al-Nusif, chief of consumer banking at NBK, stated in the announcement, “We are proud to be the first bank in Kuwait to provide such a smart solution that combines safety and easy access.” Al-Nusif added that the launch represents a major step forward in delivering digital-first, customer-centric banking solutions. He further noted, “We are combining our legacy of trust with cutting-edge technology to give our customers greater control over their valuables 24/7 with complete privacy.”

Trade.gov figures show Kuwait’s information and communication technology market reached $20.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to hit $32.18 billion in coming years, driven partly by financial services innovation. The Central Bank of Kuwait enacted a digital banking law in 2022 that prompted institutions to invest in IT infrastructure, smartphone applications and collaborations with fintech firms to advance electronic payments and data analytics. An IMF assessment of GCC digitalization found such efforts correlate with higher financial inclusion and sector resilience, a trend NBK’s new service illustrates at the retail level.

Al-Nusif told the bank in the statement that NBK uses customer opinions, suggestions and advanced databases to shape services that enhance satisfaction and anticipate future needs. The automated boxes align with international trends in secure, technology-driven banking that prioritize privacy and speed, according to the announcement. NBK headquarters hosts the system, which a smart mechanism retrieves and returns without human contact to maintain both security and convenience.

The National Bank of Kuwait’s rollout adds to existing safe deposit offerings while targeting clients seeking greater autonomy over stored assets. Industry data from KPMG’s 2025 Kuwait banking review indicated that listed banks are accelerating digital investments to cut operational costs and expand non-branch channels. This includes scaling automation for customer touchpoints, a direction the automated retrieval process directly supports.
