The US Mission to Saudi Arabia issued a security alert stating that US government employees working in the kingdom require special authorization to use King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as well as the airports in Jeddah and Dammam. The directive, published on the embassy website, followed fatal attacks on the Riyadh airport and expanded an order that had applied only to the capital days earlier. It strongly recommended all US citizens avoid the airport and surrounding areas while calling for extreme caution at all major Saudi airports.

The alert advised US citizens to prepare for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions, recommending they check departure status directly with airlines and airport operators. This guidance came amid ongoing regional tensions that have repeatedly impacted civilian aviation. The US Mission emphasized the need for vigilance in a complex security environment.

Arab News reported that the Houthi missile attack on October 10 killed 12 people and wounded more than 300 others, with at least one American among the dead. The strike targeted King Khalid International Airport and prompted the Saudi-led coalition to vow a decisive response against the Iran-backed militants. Such incidents have occurred periodically as hostilities from Yemen have targeted Saudi infrastructure.

A US Mission security alert issued on October 8 had already flagged risks from Houthi attacks on civilian airports and other critical sites that previously caused civilian casualties. The latest notice builds on those concerns by broadening the authorization requirement to cover two additional major hubs. Jeddah and Dammam handle significant international and domestic traffic in the kingdom.

The alert reiterated that US government employees are barred from traveling within 20 miles of the Yemen border due to safety risks and must obtain special authorization for the provinces of Jizan, Asir and Najran as well as the cities of Qatif, Yanbu and Taif. These longstanding rules underscore persistent threats along the southern frontier. The Mission continues to update its travel guidance based on evolving conditions.

The US Embassy in Riyadh has maintained a series of security notices in response to the latest round of attacks. Its October 11 statement reflects coordination with broader US government assessments of threats in the Gulf region. Officials have urged all American citizens in Saudi Arabia to remain informed through official channels.
