The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health updated its casualty figures from the conflict with Israel on August 16, reporting a total of 4,346 deaths and 12,301 injuries since the escalation began on March 2. The Health Emergency Operations Center attributed the increase to additional civilian casualties in recent days. This latest tally exceeds previous counts released by international monitors. The ministry has maintained a running total throughout the period of heightened tensions along the border.

According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the figures stood at 4,335 deaths and 12,277 injuries as of August 10. That assessment noted that more than 350 fatalities had occurred since a ceasefire announcement in June. The continued rise underscores the challenges in fully implementing security measures. UN reports have highlighted the humanitarian impact on civilian populations in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement under US auspices on June 26 that calls for security arrangements along their shared border. The pact includes the redeployment of the Lebanese army to southern areas and steps toward disarming non-state armed groups. It also envisions measures to rebuild affected regions and revive economic activity while establishing direct communication channels. The United States has described the deal as a first step toward lasting peace and security between the two neighbors.

The agreement followed multiple rounds of negotiations and aims to restore Lebanese sovereignty in the south. Israeli forces are to withdraw gradually as Lebanese forces assume responsibility under international oversight. Progress on the ground has included some army movements but full compliance remains a work in progress according to diplomatic sources. Reconstruction efforts are tied to the stabilization of the security situation.

International organizations have documented the extensive damage caused by months of exchanges of fire and airstrikes prior to the June agreement. The conflict displaced tens of thousands of residents and strained Lebanon’s already fragile infrastructure. Aid groups continue to call for sustained support as recovery begins. The health ministry’s ongoing reports serve as a key barometer of the human cost even in the post-ceasefire phase.
