The Saudi-led coalition said on October 18 that an AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter crashed in Saudi Arabia’s Najran region due to a technical malfunction, killing its two crew members who were officers. Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Malki stated that the aircraft belonged to the Ministry of National Guard and went down inside Saudi territory. Al-Malki dismissed Houthi assertions that the helicopter had been shot down during operations near the border with Yemen.

In a post on X, the spokesman shared images of Apache helicopters and commented that despite the claims, similar aircraft would soon enter the field. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree had said on October 17 that his group downed a Saudi Apache helicopter targeting their positions along the border. The coalition’s response emphasised a mechanical failure as the cause rather than any hostile action.

The Najran area has faced heightened Houthi attacks in recent weeks with the crash marking the first Saudi military deaths since the renewal of hostilities in July after a prolonged truce. A Reuters dispatch on the incident noted that the Yemen war has evolved into an additional theater in the wider regional conflict involving Iran while United Nations figures show the war has caused tens of thousands of deaths and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The Saudi-led intervention began in 2015 to restore the internationally recognised Yemeni government.

Al-Malki also announced the interception and destruction of several Houthi drones and ballistic missiles on the same day. Coalition forces brought down two drones over the Riyadh region and another in the Eastern Province he reported. Two ballistic missiles directed at Khamis Mushait in the southwest were similarly neutralised without causing casualties or damage.

The AH-6i a light reconnaissance platform is frequently deployed for border monitoring and security tasks along the Saudi-Yemen frontier. The coalition provided no additional information on the specific nature of the technical issue that led to the crash. This incident adds to operational challenges the coalition has encountered in its border security efforts throughout the conflict.
