Iran’s Islamic Republic News Agency reported that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir departed Islamabad on Tuesday for meetings with high-ranking officials in Tehran. The trip marks Munir’s fifth official visit to the Islamic Republic since Pakistan initiated mediation efforts in the conflict that began earlier this year between Iran and the United States. According to the agency, discussions will address bilateral cooperation along with regional developments and Islamabad’s continuing mediator role.

The Islamic Republic News Agency cited an informed diplomatic source who confirmed the departure occurred moments before the report was published. During his August visit, Munir held talks with President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, the agency recalled. Last Sunday, Araghchi and Pakistan’s Mohammad Ishaq Dar spoke by telephone about bilateral issues and diplomatic steps toward stability in West Asia.

Tasnim news agency had earlier indicated that the army chief would travel to the Iranian capital on Tuesday to consult on bilateral matters and regional questions. The outlet noted that Pakistan’s potential function as a mediator between Iran and the United States formed part of the expected agenda. Iranian media have described the engagements as elements of sustained high-level coordination between the neighbouring states.

A Pakistan army spokesperson stated on Monday that the country keeps communication channels open with all regional actors, including Iran, and that military escalation benefits no party while diplomacy remains the sole solution, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The army chief’s arrival in Tehran follows Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s meetings there the previous day, according to multiple Iranian accounts. Pezeshkian told Lavrov that external military presence fuels differences across the region, Iranian statements indicated.

The latest consultations build upon intensified exchanges between Iran and Pakistan on shared interests that have continued since the mediation process began. The two countries maintain regular contact on border security and have sought to expand trade relations in recent years. Iranian outlets have presented the visits as contributions to preventing further escalation through dialogue at both diplomatic and military levels.
