Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Sultan Haitham bin Tariq received a call from Sanae Takaichi in which the two leaders examined the latest developments across the region. The discussion also covered means of expanding relations between Oman and Japan in economic, political and cultural fields. The ministry’s statement highlighted the importance both sides attach to continued coordination on matters affecting stability in the Gulf and beyond.

Takaichi expressed gratitude for Oman’s ongoing support for paths of dialogue and de-escalation, according to the Omani Foreign Ministry readout. She also commended the Sultanate’s contributions to bolstering regional and international security. Such recognition aligns with Oman’s long-standing diplomatic tradition, which has seen it play facilitative roles in multiple regional crises since the 1980s.

Diplomatic relations between Oman and Japan were established in 1972, a foundation that has grown into substantial economic partnership, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs historical overview shows. Japan remains one of the principal destinations for Omani crude oil exports, with annual trade volumes consistently exceeding several billion dollars in recent years. The National Centre for Statistics and Information in Oman has previously placed energy cooperation at the core of the two countries’ commercial exchanges.

The telephone conversation comes amid persistent tensions in the wider Middle East, where both nations have advocated for diplomatic solutions over confrontation. Oman’s Foreign Ministry has routinely emphasised the value of inclusive dialogue in forums involving Iran, Yemen and other flashpoints. Japanese officials, for their part, have repeatedly stressed the strategic significance of secure maritime routes through the Strait of Hormuz for global energy flows.

Bilateral ties extend beyond energy into areas such as infrastructure development and human resources, according to joint communiqués issued after previous high-level meetings. Japanese companies have participated in Omani port and industrial projects, helping diversify the Sultanate’s economy away from hydrocarbons. The latest call reaffirms the two sides’ interest in further broadening this cooperation across additional sectors.

Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the exchange of views reflected a shared commitment to peace and stability. The statement indicated that both leaders agreed to maintain communication channels at senior levels. Similar telephone discussions have taken place periodically in recent years as part of regular diplomatic engagement between Muscat and Tokyo.
