The leaders discussed developments in the region and their serious implications for regional and international peace and security, as well as the impact on maritime security and the global economy, during the April 1, 2026 phone call, the Emirates News Agency reported. They also covered the continued Iranian terrorist aggression targeting the UAE and other countries, including attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. The two presidents noted that this aggression constitutes a violation of sovereignty and international law and undermines regional security and stability, according to WAM.

This latest conversation adds to a series of calls between Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Donald Trump focused on bilateral and regional matters. In March 2025, the presidents held a phone call to discuss strengthening the strategic ties between the UAE and the US across various fields, the National Media Authority stated. That discussion included reviewing the outcomes of an official visit by the UAE’s national security adviser that produced agreements in artificial intelligence, advanced technology, infrastructure and energy.

The March 2025 call also addressed regional and international issues with a focus on the Middle East situation and efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, according to the authority’s release. The UAE president stressed the importance of delivering humanitarian aid and reaffirmed support for the two-state solution as the basis for peace. These themes illustrate the breadth of topics covered in leader-level communications between the two allies.

A subsequent call in August 2026 saw the leaders discuss bilateral ties, ways to enhance them and regional developments, Anadolu Agency reported, citing WAM. The discussion came shortly after the US CENTCOM commander visited multiple countries in the Middle East including the UAE. The region was experiencing tensions that began with actions against Iranian targets in February of that year.

Iran responded with missile and drone strikes, leading to a June memorandum of understanding that initiated talks on a negotiated settlement, the report indicated. However, disputes over maritime security and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz stalled progress. The April phone call occurred in the midst of these ongoing challenges to stability.

The UAE and US have maintained a robust partnership that has proven resilient through various regional crises, according to statements from the UAE Embassy in Washington. High-level calls serve as a key mechanism for coordination on security and economic issues affecting the global economy. Such engagements have helped both countries navigate the complex geopolitical landscape in the Gulf region.
