The Qatar News Agency reported that Mexico booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32 clash at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The match kicked off nearly an hour late due to adverse weather conditions yet the hosts seized control early. Julian Quinones scored in the 22nd minute and Raul Jimenez added the second goal nine minutes later to give Mexico a commanding halftime lead.

Mexico’s disciplined defense and goalkeeper Raul Rangel produced a series of fine saves to preserve the clean sheet after the break according to the agency. Cesar Montes saw a powerful header brilliantly saved by Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez as the home side threatened to increase their advantage. The performance underlined the co-hosts’ strong showing on home soil during the tournament.

Ecuador’s hopes of a comeback were ended in stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapie was sent off leaving his side with 10 men the QNA dispatch noted. Mexico will face the winner of the England versus DR Congo Round of 32 match in the round of 16 next Monday. The result extends the team’s positive momentum through the expanded competition.

FIFA documentation indicates the 2026 edition is the first World Cup with 48 participating teams featuring 12 groups of four from which the top two and eight best third-placed sides progress to a 32-team knockout bracket. The co-hosts Canada Mexico and the United States qualified automatically for the finals. This structure extends the tournament to 39 days and requires eight matches to reach the final.

Mexico achieved its best group stage performance ever by winning all three matches without conceding a goal an assessment from ESPN noted. The side has now recorded four consecutive victories and four clean sheets across the competition. Such form positions the team well to improve upon recent World Cup exits.

Mexico has appeared in 18 FIFA World Cups with its best results being quarterfinal finishes in 1970 and 1986 both as hosts a FIFA profile stated. The national team compiled a pre-tournament record of 17 wins 15 draws and 28 losses in 60 matches. The current run on home territory carries added importance for a program aiming to reach new heights.
