The Arab League welcomed the UK decision to ban trade with Israeli settlement goods, describing the measure as an important practical step toward confronting illegal settlement activity and supporting Palestinian rights under international law. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband announced the import ban in parliament on Tuesday while stating that the British government now considers the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories unlawful. Miliband added that the policy includes sanctions on entities involved in construction, financing or real estate for settlement expansion along with a prohibition on advertising such properties in the United Kingdom.

A dozen countries including France, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Ireland, Norway and Sweden issued a joint statement backing national restrictions on trade with the settlements and calling on Israel to halt further expansion, according to an Al Jazeera compilation of the announcements. Palestinian Ambassador to Britain Husam Zomlot termed the UK move long overdue and a turning point that shifts from words to action in support of the two-state solution. The restrictions are expected to take six to nine months to implement and will focus on agricultural products such as dates and olive oil originating from the West Bank settlements.

Egypt’s foreign ministry said the British decision reflects adherence to international law and helps counter attempts to create new facts on the ground in the occupied territory, SANA news agency reported from Cairo. Foreign ministries in Kuwait, Qatar and the Palestinian Authority issued parallel statements praising the coordinated measures and referencing UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which condemns settlement building. The Arab League has maintained a consistent position against settlement activity, viewing it as an obstacle to a geographically contiguous Palestinian state.

Israel has established roughly 160 settlements housing approximately 700,000 settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 1967, according to figures cited across multiple international assessments including those referenced by the BBC. The UK has long held that these settlements violate international law, a stance Miliband reinforced by noting that British citizens and businesses should not support the occupation through economic activity. Additional elements of the policy include tighter controls on arms exports that could contribute to settlement maintenance while preserving trade with Israel within its pre-1967 borders.

Bilateral trade between the UK and Israel totalled about $3.73 billion in 2025, with UN Comtrade data indicating that settlement-origin goods form a limited but targeted portion now subject to the new ban. Enforcement will depend on accurate labeling to distinguish settlement products from those produced inside Israel proper, a point emphasised in statements from advocacy groups monitoring the policy. The announcement has already drawn retaliatory measures from Israel including a demand that Britain close its consulate in East Jerusalem within 30 days, Reuters reported citing Israeli officials.

The UK move builds on earlier sanctions imposed by Britain and several allies against settler networks accused of financing violence, which included asset freezes and travel bans. Arab League conferences in recent years have repeatedly urged member states and partners to strengthen boycott mechanisms against entities linked to the settlements. The current wave of measures coincides with heightened international scrutiny of conditions in the West Bank where settler population growth has continued steadily.
