Alnowair’s EcoCitizens puts Kuwait’s coastal questions into students’ hands

An environmental lesson can explain a problem. A model that must be designed, built and tested asks students to work through it.

That is the approach described by Alnowair’s EcoCitizens initiative, which centres on a challenge for high-school students to construct model breakwaters and consider the protection of Kuwait’s coastline.

The programme connects a physical project with a second task: explaining environmental responsibility to other students.

For Alnowair, founded by Sheikha Intisar Al Sabah, it provides a practical setting for the organisation’s broader interest in behaviour, education and community participation.

Building and explaining

The published programme describes a year-long experience involving ten teams from two local private schools.

Students are asked to develop designs, test models and create awareness campaigns within their schools. School exhibitions lead towards a final presentation between the two winning teams.

Alnowair identifies Dr Bassam Shuhaibar as initiative director and lists support from the Netherlands embassy in Kuwait and Shell Kuwait.

These details describe the programme’s intended structure. They do not establish that the models are coastal infrastructure ready for use, or that the initiative has already produced a measured environmental improvement.

A local problem as a learning setting

The coastal subject gives the exercise a recognisable connection to Kuwait.

A classroom model can make students confront questions that remain abstract in a presentation: what a structure is intended to do, how it behaves during a test and what needs to change when the result differs from the expectation.

The accompanying campaign introduces another requirement. Students must explain their decisions to people who were not part of the design process.

That combination makes communication part of the work rather than an activity added after it. A team has to understand its proposal well enough to present it, answer questions and distinguish what it has demonstrated from what it still assumes.

Where behavioural change becomes observable

Alnowair’s wider public work includes education and community programmes. Its 2025 memorandum of understanding with the World Health Organization also placed mental health and health-related cooperation within that broader institutional activity.

EcoCitizens offers a different, specific setting in which to examine the organisation’s approach: students working together on an environmental challenge.

The useful questions concern what they learn through the process. Can they explain why a design changed? Can they respond to a failed test? Can they communicate an environmental issue without promising more than their evidence supports?

Those questions are more revealing than treating participation alone as proof of impact.

Sheikha Intisar’s organisation has made behavioural change central to its public identity. EcoCitizens provides a concrete subject through which that ambition can be explored: what happens when students are asked to move from hearing about a problem to building, testing and explaining a response.
