The United Nations children’s agency reported that advances in tackling malnutrition in Gaza are at risk of reversal due to the suspension of commercial goods entering the Palestinian territory, according to a new assessment released on October 16, 2026. UNICEF called for all crossings to remain open after Israel halted commercial deliveries citing a tax dispute between local merchants and Hamas that began on October 14. The stoppage has eliminated a critical channel for food and essentials in an area where most of the population depends on humanitarian assistance following three years of war, repeated displacement and restrictions on aid.

UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires told reporters in Geneva that both commercial and humanitarian supplies must continue to enter in a predictable and uninterrupted manner. “The impact on children obviously will be felt if this situation is not resolved,” he said. “We can’t go back to a situation where children and families are not getting all the supplies, goods, and services that they require.”

A UNICEF report published on October 16, 2026 found that acute malnutrition remains a serious concern even though rates have declined since the ceasefire took hold in October 2025. The document stated that only one in three children under the age of two is currently achieving minimum dietary diversity. A UNICEF survey conducted in June additionally identified chronic malnutrition affecting one in eight children under five.

According to the report, progress in pushing back the threat of famine confirmed by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification in August 2025 stemmed from a scaled-up nutrition response, eased restrictions on food and nutrition supplies and the ceasefire itself. The assessment described those gains as remaining fragile without sustained and reliable access to goods and services. An IPC update issued in December 2025 had similarly noted that nearly the entire Gaza Strip stayed in emergency food insecurity conditions despite the truce, with projections warning of rapid deterioration if inflows were interrupted.

Israel attributed the halt in commercial goods to a disagreement over taxes involving Hamas, a decision that has severed an important supplement to humanitarian aid in the enclave. Humanitarian agencies have consistently stressed the importance of combining commercial trade with assistance deliveries to meet the scale of need among Gaza residents. Pires reinforced the appeal for swift resolution of the dispute to safeguard nutritional outcomes for vulnerable groups.

The warning arrives amid ongoing widespread destruction from the conflict that has impaired local food production and market functions, UN agencies have reported. Previous IPC analyses projected that more than 100,000 children could require treatment for acute malnutrition through the following year in the absence of expanded support. UNICEF has maintained that consistent border access is indispensable to consolidating the nutritional improvements recorded since the ceasefire.
