Poland’s Iga Swiatek, the world No. 3 and defending Wimbledon champion, advanced to the second round on Tuesday with a three-set victory over American Taylor Townsend. Qatar News Agency reported that Swiatek prevailed 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in an encounter that stretched two hours and two minutes on Centre Court. The result marks the start of her title defence following her triumph in the 2025 edition of the grass-court grand slam.

According to a Guardian assessment of the match, Swiatek appeared emotional immediately after securing the win, acknowledging the crowd before her eyes welled up. The Pole had to withstand a strong fightback from Townsend, who claimed the second set and tested the champion with aggressive net approaches and varied shot selection. Swiatek regrouped effectively in the decider to close out the contest.

Swiatek will next face Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, ranked world No. 73. Pliskova advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tereza Valentova, Sky Sports figures show. The encounter is scheduled for the second round as the tournament progresses at the All England Club.

Sixth seed Amanda Anisimova of the United States also moved into the second round on Tuesday. Anisimova recorded a straightforward 6-3, 6-2 victory over Lina Gjorcheska, according to ESPN tournament coverage. The result underscores solid early progress among the higher seeds in the women’s draw.

In the men’s singles, fifth seed Alex de Minaur and sixth seed Taylor Fritz advanced comfortably on the opening Tuesday. Wimbledon organisers confirmed both players progressed without significant difficulty in their first-round matches. These outcomes contributed to an orderly start for top contenders across both draws.

Swiatek entered the 2026 championships with an improved grass-court record compared to earlier stages of her career. WTA data places her at 28-11 on the surface heading into the defence, reflecting greater familiarity with the conditions since her initial struggles. The three-set battle against Townsend highlighted the variety that lower-ranked grass specialists can bring to early rounds.
