Indicators released by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, known as Riyada, point to expansion across Oman’s entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem from idea generation through to funding and startup support. The authority’s data, reported by the Oman Observer on October 8, highlights alignment with the goals of Oman Vision 2040 while showing a shift toward structured innovation within educational and economic institutions rather than isolated efforts. More than 50 bootcamps and hackathon events take place each year, drawing participants and helping transform concepts into viable enterprises. Riyada figures show over 3,000 startup ideas generated annually, reflecting a widening base of innovators across the Sultanate.

Student innovation has produced 310 projects in technology and innovation fields, according to the same Riyada assessment. The support infrastructure now includes 30 business incubators and 10 business accelerators, in addition to a university incubator connected to 35 colleges that aids the move from academic ideas to market-ready projects. This infrastructure growth facilitates stronger links between academic outcomes and entrepreneurship, the authority’s data indicated. Such developments build on earlier momentum where the SME sector reached 130,359 registered firms by the end of 2025, Riyada reported in February.

A total of 338 companies have secured the Riyada entrepreneurship card, granting access to 32 government incentives and facilitations designed to improve the business environment. The ecosystem has also recorded 101 grants spanning funding, investment and venture capital initiatives to back startup growth and sustainability, per the October data release. These measures come as the authority continues programmes to empower technology-focused startups through capacity building, easier finance access and legislative enhancements. StartupBlink data places the combined value of Oman’s active startups at $94.4 million following 42.8 percent ecosystem growth over the past year.

Oman’s SME sector contributed RO 9.2 billion to gross domestic product by mid-2026, equivalent to 21.8 percent of the economy, according to Riyada and National Centre for Statistics and Information figures. The authority’s broader database held 136,459 enterprises at that point, broken down into 116,195 micro, 19,196 small and 1,068 medium-sized firms. This scale underscores the role of entrepreneurship in economic diversification, with innovation-based startups forming a growing subset that employed hundreds and generated substantial market value in prior tallies. Global Entrepreneurship Monitor rankings previously placed Oman eighth among 56 countries in its entrepreneurship index.

Riyada has pursued related initiatives throughout 2026, including partnerships to improve SME financing and events linking university research to investment opportunities. One such seminar in early October examined commercialising scientific outputs to support a knowledge-based economy, the Oman Observer noted in separate coverage. The authority’s October data release reinforces these efforts by quantifying progress at multiple ecosystem stages. Projections from industry trackers suggest continued expansion if support mechanisms scale alongside rising demand for compliant, innovation-driven ventures.
