Qatar News Agency reported that President Gen. Joseph Aoun made the assessment during a meeting with lawmakers in Beirut as discussions intensify ahead of the peacekeeping mission’s scheduled conclusion. The president underlined that such an extension would not only safeguard stability but also bolster the Lebanese state’s authority and the military’s presence along the border. Aoun further stressed the importance of seamless coordination between Lebanese forces and any international contingent to maintain security gains.

According to the QNA dispatch, the president outlined a fallback model should the extension prove unattainable, calling for an alternative framework that sustains an international force presence in the south under a suitable legal arrangement. This pathway would seek to ensure uninterrupted deployment aimed at preventing any security vacuum. Lebanese officials continue to pursue diplomatic avenues for a breakthrough that secures ongoing international involvement in the region.

The agency noted that Israel has maintained its rejection of UNIFIL operations in the area for roughly a year, adding complexity to renewal efforts. Despite this stance, Lebanon has consistently advocated for sustained international monitoring to support de-escalation and state control. The position aligns with broader diplomatic initiatives to stabilise the border following periods of heightened tension.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon traces its origins to 1978 amid the Lebanese civil war, according to established UN documentation. Its responsibilities expanded significantly through Security Council Resolution 1701 adopted in 2006 after the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, tasking the mission with monitoring a ceasefire and backing Lebanese army deployment. A Reuters report from the previous year detailed how the council approved what it termed a final renewal, with the current mandate due to lapse at the end of 2026.

Reuters data from earlier in 2026 placed UNIFIL troop numbers at approximately 7,500 personnel drawn from 47 contributing nations, reflecting a reduction from earlier peaks amid ongoing financial constraints and operational strains. The mission has encountered repeated challenges, including incidents that have tested its neutrality and effectiveness in a volatile environment. Lebanese authorities have repeatedly emphasised the force’s role in facilitating the national military’s exclusive control over the southern territory.

In his exchange with the parliamentary delegation, Aoun positioned the mandate extension as integral to avoiding further instability while advancing Lebanese sovereignty. The president indicated that lawmakers would continue examining these options in forthcoming sessions to shape Lebanon’s negotiating position. QNA added that the meeting underscored Beirut’s commitment to diplomatic solutions that integrate international support with national security priorities.
