The government communications office reported that Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani unveiled Doha Investment at the Qatar Economic Forum in New York. According to the office, the platform will serve as the dedicated manager for the Qatar Investment Authority’s local investments with its own mandate and board. It will focus on building national champions in non-hydrocarbon sectors while increasing private-sector participation, the announcement stated. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said the initiative aims to accelerate the country’s next phase of economic development through targeted investments and partnerships.
A Reuters dispatch from the event placed the initial portfolio at 45 state-owned enterprises accounting for roughly one-third of the Qatar Investment Authority’s total assets. The government communications office detailed that the holdings include more than 40 companies operating in over 80 markets across financial services, transport, telecommunications, real estate, hospitality and agriculture. More than 20 of those companies generated revenues exceeding QAR 1 billion in 2025, official figures show. The portfolio features national champions such as Qatar Airways Group, QNB Group, Ooredoo Group, Qatari Diar, Katara Hospitality and Hassad Food.
Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani, Qatar’s minister of commerce and industry, will act as managing director and vice-chairman of the new division, according to the government communications office. He described the move as a consolidation of efforts considered for more than a decade rather than an entirely fresh structure, Reuters reported. A Financial Post article published in January noted that the Qatar Investment Authority had been contemplating separation of its domestic and overseas holdings as part of a potential overhaul.
The Qatar Investment Authority was established in 2005 to manage oil and gas surpluses by investing primarily abroad and reducing reliance on energy prices, an overview from the fund’s background materials indicates. Industry estimates compiled by Global SWF place its assets under management at approximately $600 billion in 2026. The fund has expanded its domestic footprint in recent years by scaling companies that have grown into national leaders, a pattern now formalized under the new platform.
Doha Investment will also seek to develop fresh national champions in clusters such as advanced technologies, manufacturing, supply chains and healthcare, the government communications office said. The launch follows an expansion of Qatar’s liquefied natural gas production capacity that is projected to generate additional revenue for sovereign investments, according to separate economic assessments. A later Financial Post report on Oct. 26 highlighted that certain QIA subsidiaries, including its artificial intelligence unit, have already been transferred to the Doha Investment structure.
Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said, “We aim to expand the role of the private sector in driving Qatar’s economic growth.” The platform operates as a wholly owned entity of the Qatar Investment Authority with a mandate to strengthen existing holdings and pursue new opportunities, the official announcement confirmed. This development builds on the fund’s established strategy of diversification both at home and internationally.
