The Palestinian permanent representative to the Arab League submitted a formal request to the organization’s general secretariat for the extraordinary meeting at the level of permanent representatives. According to Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, the session will focus on mechanisms to provide international protection and ensure adherence to international law and resolutions on Jerusalem. The move comes in response to what he described as escalating attacks by Israeli forces and armed settlers.
Al-Aklouk stated that these incidents form part of a deliberate policy to displace Palestinian communities, expand settlements and erode the foundations of the two-state solution. The upcoming discussions will also tackle violations in Jerusalem, particularly proposals by some nations to open embassies in the disputed city against established international consensus. The ambassador made the announcement on Sunday ahead of the planned Tuesday gathering.
United Nations data from September 2026 places the number of approved or advanced housing units in West Bank Area C at 4,570 with an additional 3,515 in East Jerusalem during the period reviewed. The UN also recorded tenders for 2,240 units including in the E1 zone, actions a senior official labeled an existential threat to the two-state solution. A separate Palestinian monitoring body tallied 153 settlement plans advanced in 2026 targeting over 18,000 units across the occupied territories.
The request builds on previous Arab League positions adopted in ministerial meetings earlier in the year. Those gatherings saw foreign ministers demand immediate global intervention to shield Palestinians and denounce forced displacement as a violation of international law. They additionally backed reconstruction plans for Gaza and full adherence to the 2025 ceasefire framework.
Al-Aklouk emphasized the systematic nature of the challenges facing Palestinian residents and property. He called for unified Arab and international action to counter the trends. The Tuesday session is expected to formulate responses that could be presented at the United Nations Security Council and other forums.
The developments occur against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the occupied West Bank where UN figures indicate at least 15 Palestinians have been killed by settlers so far in 2026. Such violence has accompanied the surge in settlement activity that has also seen the establishment of 65 new outposts controlling significant land areas. The Arab League’s engagement reflects ongoing efforts to mobilize diplomatic pressure for compliance with international obligations.
