Qatar News Agency reported that the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy activated its emergency plans following the attack to limit disruption and preserve the integrity of the national power network. Kuwait Fire Force teams brought the blaze under control while ministry personnel coordinated with other agencies to evaluate the destruction and begin repairs on the impacted generation units. The statement highlighted efforts to restore operations at the earliest opportunity without providing details on the scale of the outage or potential service interruptions.

The ministry described the incident in a statement as stemming from an attack that damaged facility installations and triggered the fire, affecting numerous power generation units at the dual-purpose plant. Technical teams have initiated a comprehensive assessment of the damage and are securing the site to facilitate recovery. Such facilities play a central role in meeting Kuwait’s electricity and water demands through cogeneration processes.

This event represents the most recent in a succession of Iranian strikes on Kuwaiti energy assets throughout 2026. An Al Jazeera report from April detailed how Iranian drones had damaged two power and water desalination plants along with oil facilities, though those incidents produced no reported injuries at the time. The pattern has prompted repeated condemnations from Kuwaiti authorities regarding violations of sovereignty.

Kuwait maintains an installed electricity generation capacity of about 21 gigawatts, according to assessments by Rystad Energy, with much of it concentrated in plants that simultaneously produce desalinated water. The country has outlined ambitions to incorporate an additional 14 gigawatts by 2031, including contributions from renewable sources, even as current reliance on fossil fuels remains dominant. Previous attacks earlier in the year had already highlighted vulnerabilities in this infrastructure.

The ministry’s response included immediate steps to maintain grid stability amid the loss of capacity from the affected units. Coordination among emergency services ensured the fire was promptly managed, preventing further escalation at the facility. Restoration work continues as teams prioritize returning the damaged units to functional status.

According to separate QNA dispatches, Kuwait issued strong condemnations of the Iranian actions on preceding days, characterizing them as breaches of international law and threats to regional stability. These statements followed attacks on neighboring countries including Bahrain and Jordan. The latest strike on the power station adds to the cumulative pressure on Kuwait’s utility sector.
