The US Mission in Saudi Arabia said in a security alert issued on September 20 that its government employees working in the kingdom now require special authorization for all official and personal travel to the cities of Taif and Yanbu. The measure reflects the ongoing security situation across the country, the mission stated, while it strongly encouraged US citizens to remain vigilant and monitor local developments closely. Regular and emergency consular services continue without interruption at the embassy in Riyadh and the consulates in Jeddah and Dhahran, officials noted.

Citizens facing an aerial attack should stay away from windows, glass doors and any fallen debris while monitoring phones and official news outlets for guidance, according to the alert. The mission advised keeping cell phones charged with emergency contact numbers already programmed for quick access during any incident. It also recommended enrollment in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to ensure receipt of the latest security updates.

The new requirements follow renewed Houthi militant activity targeting Saudi locations, including attempted strikes in the vicinity of Taif and Yanbu that Saudi-led coalition forces reported intercepting in recent weeks. A US Embassy travel advisory updated in mid-September maintains the kingdom at Level 3, urging reconsideration of travel owing to risks of terrorism, armed conflict and Iranian drone and missile threats against American interests. That advisory, which notes hostilities between the United States and Iran that began on February 28, also bars non-essential government travel to Qatif and requires approvals for several southern provinces near the Yemeni border.

US government family members have been allowed to join employees posted in Saudi Arabia since August 30, reversing earlier orders from March that had directed non-emergency staff to depart the country. The latest alert underscores that consular assistance remains available throughout the kingdom despite the added travel friction for official personnel. Americans received instructions to avoid demonstrations, large gatherings and areas with heavy police presence while exercising caution at sites publicly linked to the United States.

The security notice arrived one day after wider State Department guidance for citizens outside the Middle East to reconsider travel to or through the region because of the potential for swift escalation. Terrorist groups maintain active plans for attacks inside Saudi Arabia that could occur with minimal notice, particularly near holidays or at venues popular with foreigners, the embassy assessment found. These layered risks have driven incremental adjustments to movement protocols for US government staff.

Taif, situated in the western highlands of Makkah Province, and Yanbu, an industrial port on the Red Sea coast in Madinah Province, have both appeared in Houthi targeting announcements during the current round of hostilities. The authorization process for travel to either location will be handled through standard US government channels on a case-by-case basis. The mission reiterated that its overall capacity to support American citizens in Saudi Arabia has not been affected by the updated restrictions.
