Chelsea announced on Saturday that Brazilian forward Joao Pedro has signed a new contract until 2034, the club said in a statement published on its official website. The 24-year-old joined Chelsea from Brighton in July 2025 for an initial fee of 55 million pounds plus add-ons, according to BBC Sport. In the announcement, Joao Pedro said, “I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to give my long-term commitment to this club.”
The statement underlined the club’s confidence in the player and his role in the team going forward, Qatar News Agency reported. Joao Pedro netted 20 goals in all competitions during his first season and was named the supporters’ Player of the Season. He also contributed three goals as Chelsea claimed the Club World Cup title last summer.
Chelsea’s official site noted that the striker made an immediate impact after his arrival, scoring in the Club World Cup semi-final and final against Paris Saint-Germain. The forward started his English career at Watford before moving to Brighton, where transfer records from Transfermarkt show he scored 19 Premier League goals in two seasons. According to beIN Sports, the new deal improves on his previous contract that had run until 2032 with an option for one further year.
Joao Pedro is set to wear the number nine shirt this season after Liam Delap gave it up, Chelsea said. The Brazil international is expected to start when the club opens its Premier League campaign against Fulham on Monday. New manager Xabi Alonso has backed the striker as central to the team’s plans, multiple reports including from Globo indicated.
Interest from Barcelona during the transfer window was rejected as Chelsea moved to secure the forward on improved terms, according to beIN Sports. Joao Pedro registered six assists to go with his goals last term while helping the side across domestic and international competitions. Figures from FBref place his Premier League output at 15 goals in 35 appearances during the 2025-2026 campaign.
The extension comes as Chelsea prepares for the 2026-2027 season with a focus on building around key attacking talent. Joao Pedro has made more than 50 appearances for the club since his transfer, scoring consistently in various competitions. The club intends to hand out further new contracts to other important players once the transfer window closes.
